State of the sector

The UK tech sector lost roughly 1,050 jobs in announced layoffs through the first months of 2026 as part of a global trend (138,000+ tech layoffs worldwide, averaging more than 1,000 per day). However, the surface-level layoff number conceals a sharper segmentation: entry-level developer pathways are narrowing fastest, while demand for mid-and-senior engineers with AI integration skills is rising 8.9% quarter-on-quarter and 4.8% year-on-year.

The cause is mostly direct: AI coding assistants now handle a meaningful share of the work that previously justified hiring junior developers, while the work of supervising, integrating and debugging AI output requires more senior judgement. Recruiters in the UK consistently report a barbell market — lots of senior roles open, junior pipelines drying up, with the historical apprenticeship-and-graduate route into engineering under real pressure.

Outside of pure software engineering, AI product management, AI policy/governance, data engineering for AI training pipelines, and AI-aware UX research are all growth areas. UK universities are responding by retooling computer science curricula faster than usual.

Policy and cost pressures

The April 2025 employer NI rise hits tech less hard per-head than retail or hospitality because the per-employee cost is a smaller share of total compensation, but it still applies. The bigger pressure is investor caution: late-stage UK tech funding remained subdued through 2025 and into 2026, holding back the hiring that early-stage scale-ups would otherwise be doing.

The Employment Rights Act 2025 brings the unfair dismissal qualifying period down to 6 months from January 2027. UK tech employers are responding by treating early-tenure performance management more carefully and in some cases extending the structured probation phase of new hires to give time for proper assessment before the 6-month cutoff.

Visa-route changes for skilled workers continued to evolve through 2025/26, with the salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas remaining a real constraint on hiring outside London. Tech firms outside the South East report particular difficulty bringing in international engineers at the new threshold.

What this means for applicants right now

  • For mid-and-senior engineers: AI fluency is now the differentiator. Surface specific AI tools, models, and integrations you've worked with (Copilot, Cursor, Claude / OpenAI APIs, RAG pipelines, fine-tuning) on your CV's top third. Vague "familiar with AI" framing reads as bluff.
  • For junior applicants: the pure-developer entry path is the hardest it has been in 15 years. Consider adjacent on-ramps: technical support, QA automation, AI-aware product roles, technical writing, developer relations. These give you 6-12 months of context, after which the engineering pivot is easier.
  • Portfolio matters more than ever. A GitHub or public-deploy portfolio that proves you can ship and debug AI-augmented work outperforms credential-heavy CVs at most UK tech employers in 2026.
